High school sports are a great way for athletes to build self-confidence, teamwork skills, and a sense of belonging to a group. But the longer an athlete competes, his athletic identity begins to take over and outweigh his personal identity. The athlete may get the recognition and the accolades, but eventually, every athlete must move on.

We understand that playing sports impacts athletes in many other dimensions of their lives. Playing competitive sports has a huge effect on the physical, mental, and social growth of young athletes. Soft skills, like leadership, emotional intelligence, and self-awareness, are important tools for any young professional who wants to grow. We also know these same soft skills are foundational to successfully transitioning out of the game — whether it’s after high school or a 10-year pro career.
